The Importance of Good Shoes
I started my exercise endeavor by walking. While walking was OK, the shoes I wore made my shins burn and hurt. At first I thought it was just a me problem because I did not exercise before. As I started running, I realized that my shins hurt A LOT! Especially during the first mile of a run. I started asking people about my problem and reading online blogs to see if this was a normal thing. Everything I read said no, it's not. Everyone I talked to sadi no, it's not. All agreed that I needed new shoes.
So where should I find shoes? It was hard to look at the online guides because I didn't know if I under or over pronated, what type of arch I had, and where my foot strikes the ground when I run. After asking friends, I decided to go to a local sporting store that did shoe fitting. I was a bit skeptical at first but it went well and I walked away with my first ever pair of true running shoes. The are Saucony!
What a difference a pair of shoes makes. The burning and the pain are gone from my shins. My feet actually feel comfortable when I run or walk. Pretty much, these shoes are the best thing to happen to my feet in a very long time.
One piece of advice I will mention is to not let the price of a pair of shoes dictate whether or not you get them. As with any sport, you need the right equipment to succeed and to prevent injuries. For running, shoes are an important piece to invest in.

Inspirational Quote of the Day
Today I decided to post a picture of an inspirational quote that I like. Since my fastest mile so far is 13 min and 48 seconds, I think this is great. I know that I will get faster, because I am already faster than I was two months ago! So no matter how long that mile takes me, IT IS SILL A MILE and I did it.
Look for my next post on the importance of good running shoes. I will also include a picture of my sweet kicks!

5k With The Parents
Today marked the first 5k I walked with my parents. We finished in 56 minutes and we all lived. This was exciting because we could walk as a family. It was the biggest race I have participated in to date with over 400 racers. Here is a picture of us from before the start of the race.
My shirt says "Love life and it will live you back." Both of my parents had a Navy shirt on.
Today was a great day!

Inspirational Quote of the Day
I needed a good quote for the day. I started reading the Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running and it is very insightful. I like how the book gives advice and then uses real people's quotes and thoughts to flesh out topics. My quote for today is from this book.
"I tell myself that I can't compare myself with others. The competition does help me go beyond my own limits, but I remind myself that I am competing ultimately to go beyond myself, not others." - Nadia Prasad
This is something to always remember. Something that I need to remember. I want to go faster, but what matters most is how fast I go for myself. I can keep pushing myself to do better, but for myself. Not so I can be like other people. Running is both a singular sport and a plural sport. Singular because I am running for myself and trying to beat my own times. Plural because of the races and the fact there are clubs and groups that like to run together. But what running ultimately comes down to, it the single, solitary person. So I will run for myself and you can run for yourself and while we are at it, we can both run together.
Enjoy!

Patron Saint of Running
Recently, I found out St. Christopher is the Patron Saint of Runners. I knew he is the Patron Saint of Traveler's, but I never thought about a running aspect. But it makes sense! He protects you when you travel; no matter how far or how long it takes, you are protected as you travel. The Catholic Church is completely okay with this too (they have other issues with him, but we won't go into that here).
Here is a picture of a St. Christopher medal:
I also found out that St. Sebastian is the Patron Saint of Athletes. He is the Saint of Athlete's because he was a had great physical endurance. As a side note, he is also the Patron Saint of Soldiers.
Here is a picture of a St. Sebastian medal:
All of this is important because as I continue any activity, I like to know who the Patron Saint is of a given subject/topic/activity. As I continue running, I now have St. Christopher.

Inspirational Quote of the Day
My inspirational quote today is: No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch.
I also found out Disney has races. DISNEY!!!! Other than the Princess half marathon (which is awesome!), I really want to run The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler. Disney villains chase you - how awesome! Go find out more here.

First post!
This is my first post, for which I am quite excited about. About 2 months ago, I started walking and about 1 month ago I started running. I don't pretend to be the best runner in the world, but I am the best runner I can be at this time. To go from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one has been both difficult and fun. Difficult because my body and I had a deal - do nothing and no one gets hurt, mostly. Fun because I have finally found the joy in exercising and doing something for myself.
So far, I've participated in three 5k's, but one was not like any 5k I've ever seen. My first 5k was 1 month ago. I walked it and finished in 56 minutes. Pretty good for a walker, if I do say so myself. My second 5k was actually a warrior run and I crawled in mud and swam in a lake to just complete it. I was just happy to finish at all. Today was my third 5k. It rained the whole time, but I set a personal record of 45 minutes and 1 second. Personally, I am proud of myself.
Next week is my fourth 5k. I plan to walk it with my parents. It will be a fun experience and a nice way to share my newly found joy with my parents. Watch for a post on that to come!
